Report: Solar Outlook Report 2017

Report: Solar Outlook Report 2017

| by Editor | Posted in Reports

This report, produced by MESIA for Solar at MEE, offers a detailed outlook of solar in the MENA region. It covers the latest solar projects that are being implemented, as well as the forecasted trends for 2017 across the sector.

With record low tariffs on Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) 800 MW Phase III project and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority’s (ADWEA) Sweihan project, we could call it a successful year for large scale solar on the Arabian Peninsula. Record low tariffs below 3 US$ cents per kWh attracted worldwide press attention.

Electricity demand in the Middle East has historically been growing between 7% and 8% CAGR. This year, total electrical energy demand in the Middle Eastern region is expected to exceed 1,000 TWH.

Solar power plants offer an optimal fit for utilities relating to variable generation profiles throughout the day. It is expected that large-scale solar PV in the Middle East will stay competitive with power generation, even with oil at US$35 per barrel and gas at US$6 MMBtu. Those kinds of economics will continue to boost the adoption of solar in countries such as Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, and Pakistan.
